Mike –
VXA has taken their outstanding solid-color polyester briefs to an entirely new and exceptional level! The Sharkskin briefs are simply incredible! They fit the same as the polyester solid briefs (prior post on that subject summarized below); however, the material is decidedly different. Water just “falls off” these briefs, making me feel even more streamlined in the water! I’ve worn these for a couple of weeks now (daily swims of 3000-4000 meters) doing aerobic sets, speed sets, IM sets, etc., and I feel even faster and more streamlined in the water wearing these Sharkskin briefs! There is very little water resistance in the polyester solid briefs, but even less so when wearing the Sharkskin briefs! Plus, these Sharkskin briefs dry incredibly fast! (And, that’s saying something because the polyester solid briefs dry very quickly already – a benefit of the unlined construction.) The Sharkskin briefs are also unlined and fit exactly the same way as the polyester solid briefs fit. As I noted in an earlier comment, the sizing is more akin to Japanese sizing since these are Japanese-inspired swim briefs. So, you’ll want to size up from your usual US sizes. I’m 152 pounds with a 31-inch waist. I normally wear a size 30 in Speedo brand briefs for training and 28 for racing. This equates to size XL and L, respectively, in the VXA briefs, in my opinion. I like the XL for longer days of training (a bit more room up front), but L fits best for competition (good balance between compressive streamline with adequate room and comfort up front). These are absolutely my favorite swim briefs! They are extremely comfortable to wear and they look great at the same time! The Sharkskin brief’s material also feels very soft, making them even more comfortable to wear. VXA offers a very unique competition swim brief that is ubiquitous in Japan but very hard to get in the US – that is, until VXA came along. The blog posts on this site from Alex are spot-on! The narrow sides offer increased range of motion, the rear seam eliminates suit sagging and water collecting in the seat of the suit, and the unlined front provides significantly greater comfort than lined suits while also enabling the suit to dry extremely fast. In short, these suits are designed and made for optimizing swimming performance and making long hours in the water much more comfortable. These are absolutely my go-to suits!! I hope VXA eventually adds additional colors to the Sharkskin line (though the three offered colors look amazing!)! When you want to swim fast with less resistance and look good and feel comfortable doing it, you can’t go wrong with the polyester solid briefs or the new Sharkskin briefs!!
